For the past month, we saw rapid changes in our world. The Corona virus or Covid-19 has reshaped our culture and redesign people life to take precautious measures on health and hygiene. Take a look back years ago, people are paying little attention to simple things such as washing hands or wearing mask to grocery shopping. However, those old habit are gone and will be replaced with new norm where people will care on health especially sanitation.
Sanitation as we know includes washing hands, clean toilets and adequate treatment on human disposals. Thus, clean has become sacred word in this difficult time. Nowadays, people consciously demand to clean amenities, stuff and facilities within their private spaces such as households, offices, even car. Therefore, spraying or wiping down disinfectant liquid to door handle, table, chair, phone even groceries plastic bags are common scenery now.
However, other than cleaning daily things possessed by people, one might argue that toilet particularly in public space also take part on emitting and transmitting viruses, germs, bacteria. Since, numerous people are using public toilet continuously, thus cleanliness inside the facilities is a compulsory thing to have. We at Jamban understand that public toilets are one of vital places to transmit disease, and the new norm helps us to bolster people perception on clean or hygiene status where in long run able to save lives and reduce burden on treating patient.
We have learnt that flushing can emit bacteria and virus into aerosol where it can sprawl 1–2 meters above closet. Therefore, it advisable to close the closet before flushing to reduce the impact of spreading germs. Jamban who operates in Indonesia saw lack of attention in the society regarding toilet manner because people have little knowledge on proper toilet practices. Moreover, there are rules on designing toilets to become proper sanitation facility, which in many cases lack at public spaces. Most of the spaces did not have family or disable friendly toilets, and not to mentioned amenities inside the toilet are on minimum standard.
Therefore, Jamban pursue to develop toilet with clean and hygiene status and simultaneously educate people to have proper manner to use the facility. The new norm is expected to reduce number of diseases that commonly transmitted such as diarrhea, urinary tract infection, even cervices cancer. Also, increase people attention to take proper measure on hygiene by using better sanitation facilities and clean toilets in regular basis.
